Report: Nathan McCallister Catches Record Breaking Brown Trout
Elk Grove - We all dream about catching the big one, but only a few of us catch the biggest one ever.
The boy smiling and holding up the biggest brown trout ever caught in California history is Nathan McCallister, 8 years old, of Elk Grove, California.
Nathan and his dad Mike were going after salmon on the Sacramento River, on Sept. 9, 1997. "We were casting away, having a nice, quiet day on the river", said Nathan.
But his life changed when the king of all brown trout bit his lure.
For the next 15 minutes, it was touch and go, as the fish fought to break free. "I thought it was going to break my pole and get away. . . .but I just hung on", said Nathan.
Mike said he could hardly get the net around the fish as Nathan brought his prize to the boat side.
"He would have been happy catching anything. . . .but to catch a record breaking fish is something he can brag about for the rest of his life" said Mike.
On a certified scale, Nathan's fish weighed 27 pounds, 7.25 ounces. It had a 28-inch girth. It has been certified as the California state record.
The previous California record brown trout was caught in 1987 from the Upper Twin Lake in Mono County. That fish, caught by Danny Stearman of Bakersfield, weighed 26 pounds, 8 ounces. That record still stands today, as this is one big fish tale.
